The Batavia Public School District 101 Board of Education is placing an advisory question on the November 4th general election ballot asking voters to vote “yes” or “no” on the issuance of $15 million alternate bonds as a means to fund capital improvement projects.
The plan divides the $15 million between capital improvements at several schools (end-of-life assets, such as boilers, roofs, lighting systems, parking lots, windows, etc.) and the athletic fields at Batavia High School, where two turf fields and sports lighting would be installed.
Vote YES - here are the facts:
The project list at schools throughout the district is addressing projects based on the following criteria; health & life safety, safety & security, critical functionality and energy savings. The improvements at the Batavia High School athletic complex are needed for student accessibility and safety.
This is NOT a tax referendum, but simply a question to authorize the school district to issue alternate bonds as a cash management tool to complete these capital projects now instead of over the coming years, which could significantly cost the district more. The $15 million allows the school to pay back the bond from its capital expense budget. The annual line item for capital expense is $1.5mm, and the bond payback schedule calls for $1.2mm. In the event the district needs more than that for the year, it has the ability to reallocate resources from other areas in the budget to cover that need. This means taxes will NOT be affected!
Safety for the Students
Batavia High School currently has over 300 students practicing off site at locations around Batavia due to the lack of space on campus. This creates safety issues for both students and the public, however turf and lighting at the high school athletic complex will allow students to return to campus, including marching band, soccer, football and lacrosse. The district is also looking at ecofill options in place of crumb rubber for the turf fields.
